Error Found In Governor's Redistricting Event
Critic Says Location Of Event May Not Have Been Mistake
May 5, 2005
ELK GROVE, Calif. -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger held a news conference Thursday, pushing his plan to change the way congressional district lines are drawn, but his dividing line turned out to be incorrect.
Schwarzenegger chose a neighborhood in Elk Grove for the event, putting down a red ribbon between two homes to represent the district dividing line. The governor contends lawmakers who are looking to increase their chances of re-election have drawn district lines.
"This is what we do when we do reform," Schwarzenegger said. "We just take care of the job and do it the right way."
The problem was that the location where the line was laid down during the news conference is not where the district dividing line is. The real line is about one-eighth mile east of the event, according to the Sacramento Registrar's Office.
The governor's office said Thursday that it got its line off a legislative Web site. The office also said it didn't know if that information was correct.
KCRA 3 got the correct information by phoning the Registrar's Office, which is the official source for such information.
The governor's critics pointed out that Thursday's event took place within a gated community, which -- they say -- suggest the governor's misdrawn line may not have been a simple mistake.
"I think the governor is trying to keep protesters out, teachers and firefighters and other people that are upset with his policies, and trying to go behind closed doors and behind gates. He's afraid to face the people," said Steve Maviglio, spokesman for the Assembly Speaker's Office.
The governor's spokesperson said to not miss the point, which is that Elk Grove is a divided community and redistricting is necessary there
